to go with that  cake?

unique baby shower diaper cakes

Give an expecting mommy- more than she’s expecting. Most baby shower diaper cakes use a paper towel tube, a baby bottle, or something similar for center support. Instead, use a bottle of Champagne or wine (it will be covered by diapers). It’s a fun surprise for mom and dad to find after baby is born, and the diapering is in full swing! Your gift will be much appreciated!

Baby Shower Gift Cake

To make this cake you will need:

  • 2 large packs of diapers(I suggest size 1 or 2)
  • Gift box (optional for extra layer)
  • 2 large packs of wipes(with out the plastic container)
  • Small elastic bands
  • Wrapping paper
  • Fabric Ribbon
  • Double sided tape
  • Hot glue or craft glue

Optional supplies:for curling ribbon

  • ¼ inch wooden dowel (can be purchased at most craft stores)
  • Wooden clothes pins (DO NOT USE PLASTIC)
  • Flat baking sheet-covered with foil
  • Embellishments
  • Baby toys and baby items (baby bottles, pacifiers, bibs)

Here’s how to do it:

Starting with the base of the cake:

1. Use a flat round surface such as, a cake platter
or cardboard covered with decorative contact-paper.

2. Gift wrap packaged diapers with colored, printed, or white
gift paper of your choice.

3. Place both diaper wipe packages side-by-side; and tape together with clear scotch tape. Wrap wipes with coordinating gift paper.

TIP: Use double sided tape to fold wrapping
paper edges in, this will give a smooth, seamless
appearance to your diaper cake.

4. Roll 10 diapers and secure with small elastic bands.

Rolling the diapers:

Place diaper on a flat surface with the inside of the diaper, face-up. Keep the flaps of the diaper folded in. Roll the diaper from the front to the back-keep the rolls snug and even.

When the diaper is complete, you will have a cylinder shape. Secure baby diaper with an elastic band.

TIP: I like to use small, clear or white, elastic hair bands. You can find them where ever children’s hair accessories are sold.

Do you want your cake a little bit fancy?
Add some curled ribbon

Here’s what you will need:

  • Fabric ribbon (grosgrain 7/8 inch, is what I recommend).
  • ¼ inch wooden dowel (can be purchased at most craft stores)
  • Wooden clothes pins (DO NOT USE PLASTIC)
  • Flat baking sheet-covered with foil

How to curl the ribbon:

  • Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
  • Measure and cut 20 inches of 7/8 inch grosgrain ribbon.
  • Heat seal the ends of the ribbon to prevent fraying.

1. Wet ribbon with water, squeeze out excess. Wrap damp ribbon around wooden dowel.

2. Secure ribbon ends with wooden clothes pins.

3. Set the contents on a foiled covered baking sheet,
and place in preheated oven.

4. After 25-30 minutes, remove ribbon from oven and allow it to cool and dry.

5. Gently unwind ribbon from wooden dowel.

You now have a curly ribbon, you can use for your gift decorating…

Glue ribbon around cake with small beads of glue. Allow glue to dry according to manufactures instruction.

Tips for seamless gift wrapping:

Invert fold, secure fold with double sided tape. Bring fold to edge of package. Secure with double sided tape to complete.

Simple decorating for cute diaper cake ideas

Top diaper cake with a stuffed animal, baby toy, booties, or flowers.

Tulle or colored tissue paper can be used to wrap or cover diapers that are printed with color.

Cover cake with cellophane and tie with a ribbon. This will protect the diaper cake from dust or surface damage.

Cakes can also be made with baby blankets, towels, crib bedding, cloth diapers, or clothing.

TIP: If you want to build your diaper cake with white diapers; Earth’s Best and Seventh Generation are both brands that do not put prints on their diapers-no dyes, no nasty chemicals. We love how much better they are for baby, (especially a newborn baby) and the environment too.

Cloth diapers work just as well for this cake. You may need to use a gift box to put the cloth in.
